We (4 Peace Corps Volunteers) in South Africa are raising money to send about 40 young girls from our respective communities in Limpopo to camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our World). This camp will be free of charge for the participants and run 100% by Peace Corps Volunteers and counterparts from our communities. The main focus of the camp is empowerment and health education with the main focus being HIV/AIDS. We have been living and working in rural areas for almost a year and a half now and have seen first hand what HIV/AIDS has done to the people of South Africa.Overall, 5.6 million people are living with HIV in South Africa, about 18% of people in Limpopo are infected with the highest rates for females. Lack of education, rape, lack of empowerment and decision making for females, and poverty are some reason why the rates are so high and also make solving the problem very difficult. This camp will be a wonderful opportunity for the girls to grow and learn in a safe and fun environment. For one girl to attend camp for a week it will cost about $200 (USD), this will cover everything from transport to materials. This is an opportunity of a lifetime, and even a small donation will go a long way to helping create a AIDS free South Africa!
