"You never think anything bad will ever happen to you. As an adult you handle whatever is thrown at you one day at a time. What do you do as a parent when something bad happens to your child? I found myself asking this question after my 20 week ultrasound the joys of finding out we were having a boy were cut short after the doctor told my husband and I they found something serious. My heart stopped... my baby, my unborn baby. I was told my child had an SCT teratoma a tumor off his tailbone that could grow larger than my son. As a family we were swept into a whirl wind of specialists and uncertainty. At 24 weeks we were told the volume of my sons tumor now exceeded the volume of his head. We were immediately sent to Cincinatti OH. As a family my husband, my self, and our 18 month old daughter left everything in search of answers. We spent the next 3 weeks talking with specialists who closely monitored the baby watching and waiting for his heart to fail. As a parent not knowing if your child is going to live creates an unbearable grief. At 26 weeks we couldn't watch any longer if the doctors didn't step in my sons heart would fail. The solution open fetal surgery. My son was operated on while still in my womb. A 2 pound tumor was removed and my son was retuned to the womb. 1 week later he was born 3 months early weighing 2lbs 10oz. This experience has humbled me and I realize as a parent you will throw yourself under a train if it means your child will be ok. I am writing this letter from the Cincinatti Children's hospital NCIU with my now 2 week old son laying on my chest. He is a survivor a fighter he is my inspiration in life. Yes in the back of my mind medical bills and housing expenses are piling up but my son is alive." ~Sandy Hundsrucker
