The Oak Hill Restoration Project is proud to help the Civil War project remember our Eternal Heroes and improve their sacred place of rest, and in turn promote our area's history! The Calumet Region Civil War Preservation Project is seeking contributions from the public to place commemorative Grand Army of the Republic, or G.A.R., medallions and U.S. flags at the grave sites of region Civil War veterans. The effort commemorates the 150th anniversary of the war with a goal of marking as many veteran grave sites as possible between now and July 4. Each medallion and flag set costs $18. The Times donated the first 16 medallions but would like to place more at other grave sites. 7 new Federal Headstone Applications recently were submitted to the V.A. for consideration for new headstones to replace the old damaged or worn (or even missing) stones. Additional applications will be submitted as time and research allows. To contribute to the fund in any amount, make checks payable to The Times and mail them to The Times, Attn: Civil War Preservation Project, 601 W. 45th Ave., Munster, IN., 46321 or make the donations in-person at any of The Times' offices in Munster; 2080 N. Main St., Crown Point; or 1111 Glendale Blvd., Valparaiso. The contributions are not tax-deductible.
