What is the HIV Awareness Cup about? The Maasai have always been renowned as one of the worlds great pastoral tribes. With the much documented 2011 drought decimating several countries in the Horn of Africa, many Maasai are now heading to urban centres in search of employment or further education. One of the main issues that goes hand in hand with urban populations is a higher prevalence of HIV....urban Kenya is no different. We hope that, through our annual football tournament we can attract groups of young Maasai males from across the Rift Valley to partake in an event which is part sport / part education. The ultimate aim of the Balls 2 FIFA, Balls 4 Africa Cup is to promote knowledge and use of safe sex precautions and work towards overcoming some of the stigmas attached to HIV/AIDS in Kenya. The event will be hosted at Olmaroi school in December 2011 in conjunction with MACCONET (a not-for-profit Maasai community organisation). Last year, with only a few days planning we managed to get together 4 teams (and over 60 players) from across the region, no easy task when the team arrive by bicycle, scooters and by foot (walking more than 20km to get to the event). A nurse will attend to give a workshop before the tournament kicks off where she will explain various aspects of the importance of HIV prevention and regular testing. Throughout the day there will be a voluntary HIV testing facility on site for lads wishing to get checked out.
