'Turtle legend' Yannis Vardakastanis built our one of a kind sand-saving showers in 2023. The system filters the sand from the water so we are able to return the sand back to the turtle nesting habitat at the end of the turtle season. This is to highlight the importance of sandy beaches being an important habitat for sea turtles to lay their eggs, and hatchlings to survive and hatch. It is estimated that 60% of the sea turtle nesting habitat on Zaskynthos has been lost due to the tourism industry, we have especially seen evidence for this on the beach in front of our center; Gerakas Beach.
