With the extra money above our original goal amount for just the maps, I can purchase vis-a-vis pens to write on our maps, e asel pad poster paper, and extra school supplies that we use throughout the year (spiral notebooks, colored pencils, etc.)

As a Social Studies teacher, my goal is to make learning about the issues that impact our lives come to life. In my 23 years of teaching, I've found that students engage with content more when they have tangible learning tools. Maps allow for learning concepts of distortion, direction, point-of-view, scale, spatial awareness, interpreting data and problem solving -- all of which are transferable skills.

For example: "Spatial thinking has been linked to greater success in math and science. Children who develop robust spatial thinking skills will be at an advantage in our global and technological society" (MapShop).

Maps teach kids so much more than just locations of places, which in and of itself provides crucial context for kids as they learn about the impact of that various events, globalization and human impact had, and are having, on these places.

While these maps will be used during projects for which the unit is a focus on geography, all of the units I teach in World History and United States Social Studies involve a story of the physical world, so these maps will be used on a frequent basis throughout the school year.
