Scholls Heights ISC hasn't added a story.
“Tactile Tubs” would help our students regulate their sensory systems while at school. Many of the students who attend the Independent Skills Center classroom at Scholls Heights Elementary experience Autism Spectrum Disorder or other developmental disability. Students in this program often have difficulty regulating their sensory systems within the typical classroom routines. These learners benefit from “sensory breaks” that allow them to center, calm, and re-focus in order to be ready to learn. Our students will benefit from a personalized set of fun and purposeful materials that honor their unique sensory needs. When students are regulated and have “primed” their sensory systems, they are ready to engage with the curriculum and tackle new learning.
With your support we will be able to address this important need. At the present time we have a small quantity of materials with which we create these sensory experiences, however these are shared among multiple students in our class. Under the current COVID environment, this is no longer ideal. As we are making plans for the return of our students to the classroom, we are invested in creating an environment that is as healthy and safe as possible. It is no longer the best health practice for students share items that can be transmission vehicles for viruses. With your support, we would create individual “Tactile Tubs” for each student. These bins would contain a set of materials used by a single student to achieve the sensory experiences that allow them to calm and re-focus on their work and the instruction. We would curate the most effective materials and tools to address the sensory need of each student. By eliminating the need to share these items, we increase the overall health and safety of all in our classroom community.
