Sato Kindergarten hasn't added a story.
We are a team of lower elementary educators that see a growing need for a regulation space for our students who are being asked to meet high academic demands in the classroom. We firmly believe that regulatory skills need to be taught to our students in order to meet their emotional needs. For example a student who is experiencing dysregulation could throw furniture or lash out at teachers and peers, which can lead to room clears to keep all students safe. So the skills such a student would need to be taught would be deescalation of their raging emotions to come back down to a regulated space so they can function safely as a member of their classroom community. As a team, we share the love of creativity, ingenuity, student autonomy, and growth mindset. A solution we feel would be a huge benefit for countless students would be a regulatory space for students to practice the mindfulness strategies we teach such as the Zones of Regulation where they are able to identify how they are feeling in that moment.
For instance, a student might be taught to choose a weighted wrap that helps them calm down and deal with trauma and/or anxiety.
They could use a trampoline to release excess energy or use a sensory table to redirect their focus to something calming.
We hope to create a space to support the Whole Child Approach for every kindergartner to be healthy, safe, engaged, and challenged through STEAM experiential learning opportunities. With this initiative it would allow them to build relationships, along with a sense of self and balance, on a daily basis to increase academic and social and emotional success.
