Normally I'm the person helping others do fundraising and not one to ask for help, but sometimes you really need it and I really do need some help. Last month I was robbed and assaulted in northern Alberta, so much so that my nose was broken in 3 places. More ...

Earlier this year I had planned on heading Mexico to open a transformation house for abused and marginalized women, wherein they would be helped and supported by several of my colleagues to completely transform their lives around. I have been traveling a lot for work trying to tie up loose ends before I made the trip. This project is something very near and dear to my heart, having over come my own experience with witnessing domestic violence as a child and experiencing it from my ex husband, many years ago. Now due to my surgery I have to delay this much needed project.

I happened to be in Northern Alberta for work, when I was robbed and beaten. None of you would notice that my nose has been broken, I do and it's pretty apparent to those that see me every day. I know that you are most likely thinking, a broken nose is no big thing, it will heal in time, but in my case it's a lot different. This is not the first time my nose has been broken and because of that, I have developed sleep apnea and it has worsened with this last injury, wherein it has taken a serious toll on my ability to breath and sleep properly.

My injuries are not healing very well, sneezing and coughing are quite painful and because of this, it's affecting my work. Being self employed I'm the only person I have to rely on to ensure my income is stable and although I feel great some days, some days are not so pleasurable. I am going to require 2 surgeries, possibly 3, one wherein my ENT surgeon (ENT -ear nose and throat) will place some tubes in my outer sinsuses for a few months, repair my deviated septum, so it opens up my air passages. The second surgery is where he will remove the tubes, hopefully the problem will be corrected and if not, then I will have to see a dental surgeon that specializes in sleep apnea.

I have had the privilege of meeting two of my ENT surgeons patients, they both have raved about his work (these are ongoing relationships, not a one time meeting) and have both explained the process from their perspectives and are very happy with the results. Although I'm not looking forward to having so much downtown time from work (being a workaholic) it would be nice to have this finally corrected properly, smell again (my sense of smell is very limited, due the injuries) and get a good nights rest so I can focus better on my work.

Although Canada does have a pretty awesome health care plan, I am self employed and some things are not covered (I haven't paid BC medical for 12 months consecutively, since I just moved back to the province) and if they are covered, in most cases they are only 70 to 80% covered. My surgery is a day surgery, meaning I can go home the same day, however I have been told that this first couple of weeks are pretty painful and it does come with some potential risks (which is why I didn't get it done a couple years ago, as I was too scared).

  • nasal obstruction,
  • bleeding,
  • chronic nasal drainage,
  • eye damage,
  • numbness of facial structures,
  • septal perforation,
  • alteration of sense of smell or taste, and
  • failure to resolve any associated nasal or sinus problem

In total this whole process will take 4 to 6 months, unless I need the 3rd surgery, which would be about a year since scheduling and meeting with specialists is time consuming (great healthcare comes with it's downside in some cases).

If you can help, it would be greatly appreciated. Please note that I am offering my coaching sessions for very affordable prices and these are not my normal rates, I do realize the holiday season is just around the corner.
