In October 2014 I have the wonderful opportunity to volunteer with Friends of Honduran Children (FOHC) on a health brigade as part of my community nursing placement with Trent University. FOHC is a non-profit organization based out of Peterborough that pairs with a Honduran agency called Soiedad Amigos de los Ninos to provide health services to the Honduran community. 70% of the Honduran population (7 million) live in extreme poverty and 40% of the population are children (in comparison to 18% in Canada).

Honduras is considered the poorest country in Latin America. We will be visiting remote villages providing health promotion education in areas where clean water is a concern. We will be teaching in areas such as nutrition, illnesses, hygiene, pre-natal health, dental care and sexual education. According to the World Health Organization It is estimated that 30.1 % of the population in Honduras receive no health care, 83 per cent are uninsured and many people in rural regions (54%) are excluded completely from health care services.

This health brigade will not only provide a great educational experience for my future nursing career but will also allow support to be provided for Honduran children, families and communities. The focus of our health brigade this year is disease prevention (HIV/AIDS), health promotion (hygiene), education (sexual, nutritional, water sanitation), and construction projects (latrines, safe stove installations etc). For more information please visit the link below or contact me personally.

As a volunteer we are responsible for personal flight, food, supplies, and accommodations. In addition to our personal cost we are asked to fundraise $500 dollars (minimum) to purchase necessary supplies of which include; medications, building supplies, project costs, and medical supplies.

FOHC provides tax receipts for your donations that are mailed promptly.

I want to thank you in advance for your consideration in supporting FOHC and my health brigade. Any donation, big or small, is greatly appreciated.

Best,

Kathryn Bushuk
