Crystal, age 33, is a single mom living in Henryetta, Oklahoma with her three wonderfully polite and kind-hearted boys Chris, 15 years old, Jayden, 11 years old, and Timmy “the hugger”, 7 years old. Crystal is in dire need of a heart transplant. She is currently in the hospital separated from her children who are being cared for by a family member.
When Crystal was a teenager she had bone cancer and went through chemotherapy and surgery to achieve remission. Approximately eight years ago she contracted the extremely rare Coxsackie B Virus. Given the uncommon nature of the virus, especially in adults, it did severe damage before doctors were able to diagnose the problem. Her heart had been attacked causing severe enlargement and leaving her with congestive heart failure. The doctors informed her then that there was nothing they could do to offer a “cure” and she should expect only to prolong her life with medication. At a visit three years ago, Crystal was told that her heart was only functioning at 10% and she was given six months to live. The doctors were certain that she would not survive beyond that time limit…Crystal did.
In January of 2014 Crystal coded and was rushed to Tulsa, Oklahoma and then the Integris Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City where she received a LVAD device, was released and sent home. She has to “plug-in” every night to charge the LVAD and yet there has been a sigh of relief from family and friends; Crystal had been granted some valuable time. Although the LVAD is the only thing keeping her alive, it comes with additional problems. Crystal has had to return to the hospital due to a severe infection caused by the device. After three surgeries, another is underway today to remove this life threatening infection. She has also been put on the heart transplant list as it has become apparent that her body can sustain the LVAD device no longer. This is considered her last option.
If she survives the surgical procedure today, and the infection is brought under control, Crystal will be released from the hospital but must stay within 20 miles in the hope of a life-saving heart becoming available. Although we cannot control Crystal’s medical condition or the availability of a heart, it is possible to make a difference in her life and the livelihood of her young family. Family expenses are a constant struggle, medical expenses are a true challenge and being displaced from her home exaggerates this difficult situation. Anyone who wishes to help Crystal and her boys may contribute here. Any amount, regardless of size, is appreciated more than can be expressed. We will personally oversee the management of funds to help Crystal. We are extraordinarily grateful for your caring thoughts and heartfelt prayers for Crystal and her boys.
With great appreciation for your love and friendship,
LuCretia Arthur and Stephanie (Lee) Orr
