What songs are those people singing?  We have no records, so we can only guess.  Vital information about Jewish service order and music is being lost.  Archiving in cyberspace would preserve our history and give our descendants valuable information about Jewish worship practices.  Increasing congregant enthusiasm by sharing effective service strategies in real time is another positive outcome.

Creative Jewish professionals frequently discard their service song lists, not realizing their worth.  I am hoping that this site will inspire them to scan and upload their records before they find their way to the wastebasket.  Synagogue administrative staff don't save the lists either.  They often make hard choices on what they save and how they spend their time.  How marvelous if synagogues could give historically significant material to a cyberspace museum where everyone has access (and maybe a lot more than what we are trying to preserve here)!

A recent thesis project revealed the absence of vital service content information.  Written documentation was virtually nonexistent from 1945-80 except for Annual Confirmation programs which were preserved at the Oregon Jewish Museum in Portland, Oregon. Adequate discovery time, unavailable for students with graduation deadlines, will hopefully reveal more material.
