Hello Family and Friends

-I’m excited to share that my son, Braxton, has decided to join the Capital Church Guatemala 2014 Mission, and will be headed to San Lucas, Guatemala , July 18-27 to work on a construction project (either a home for a widow, or a recently-completed school that already needs an expansion). This will be the second Guatemala team from our home church, which has partnered with Hungry For Life to provide helping hands with construction, meet basic needs, and to build friendships that bridge cultures and leave a lasting imprint on our lives and theirs.

Over half of Guatemalans live below the poverty line, and for indigenous people in rural areas, the number is much higher- a staggering 78 percent. One third of Guatemalans live on less than $2 per day. nearly HALF of Guatemala's children suffer from chronic malnutrition, and, despite the presence of numerous aid groups who recognize the existing poverty, Guatemala recently surpassed Honduras to earn the unfortunate title “Second-poorest country in Latin America”. Even access to basic health care and education are limited.

Braxton is feeling both excited and nervous as he prepares to venture into unknown territory. He is excited to use his talents to build, and also looks forward to seeing how other people live (although he knows it will be unsettling). He is NOT looking forward to the reports of giant spiders and cockroaches….but I’m sure that he will be fine.

So, here’s where the “Partnering” part comes in: We need you. Specifically, we are asking for three kinds of partners: Prayer partners, Encouragers (people to just say Hi to Brax, and provide him with stories of your own mission experiences, and be a sounding board as he prepares and returns), and financial partners to offset $1,300 of the $2,000 trip. All three will be an important and appreciated investment, so if you’d like to be one of our partners, please respond via message, text, or paper airplane, and you’ll be gratefully added to Braxton’s “team”! As a return on your investment, you’ll be receiving periodic updates, and a post-trip debriefing from Braxton about his experiences, the people of rural Guatemala, and the accomplishments of the Capital Missions’  team.

As a mom, I can think of no better gift to give my son than to expand his world view, and give him the opportunity to live out the Gospel  by serving those who truly are in need. In Matthew 22:37-40, Jesus sums up the whole of our lives in two commands: “Love God, Love others”, and reminds us that everything- our identity, our actions, and the way we frame our world- hinge on living those two commands.  I’m ever-grateful for my sons, my family, and my very large and loving group of friends who have always been there to cheer us on. Thanks to all of you for your continued support and smiles.
