ENGLISH STORY
My brother Mike is a guy that worked hard all is life, putting in some 33 some years at the paper mill in Gatineau. When the plant declared bankruptcy, he was forced to retire with a huge percentage loss of his pension because he had not yet reached 35 years of service. Faced with a reduced pension, he managed to buy himself a small cottage in Gracefield, Quebec and transformed a house into a home. He lives very modestly and never asked for anything from anybody. He values his independence and makes do with what he has. A simple but happy retirement. With very little free money at the end of each month, he nonetheless manages to cope with the day to day obligations and always has a welcoming word to say to family and friends, even friends of friends are always welcome at his place. He never judges but always encourages everyone who crosses his path.
He is one with nature, an avid hunter and adores fishing. He is supported by his two lifetime best friend, Jean-Paul Osborne and Claude Dumoulin. They always have been there for each other no matter what the challenges. But now Mike needs some extra help from all of us.
Mike was admitted to the Maniwaki emergency hospital with an acute stomach attack at the end of July 2013. He had to have emergency surgery on the spot. They discovered a mass in his large intestine the size of a Cantaloupe which had to be removed immediately. They removed 14 inches of intestine and redirected the intestine exit to the side of his lower chest attached to a removable plastic pocket to collect and eliminate the intestine garbage. Those pockets are very expensive and are not covered by any government programs. At the beginning they had to be re-placed once a day but now they need replacement 3 and sometime 4 times a day. Mike’s financial situation simply put cannot absorb the extra expenses even though those expensive pouches are indispensable to maintain life, he cannot live without them.
If that wasn’t enough, he later found out that he had colon cancer. He now has to face chemotherapy every two weeks for at least the next six months before finding out if this particular cancer can be beaten. As you all know I’m sure, those treatments are not only painful but the lasting effect and side effects are enormous and takes its toll on the long run. With all that to deal with, Mike always has a smile for us and comforts us more often than we comfort him strangely enough.
That is why the time has come for all of us to give back to a guy who would never ask. We are asking friends and family to donate whatever they can to help Mike improve his chances of beating this killer disease. We don’t want to get donation at his funeral; we want to help him recover while alive so that he may be with us for many more years. Mike is probably the kindest person I know. You would never hear him talk against anybody; he loves everyone and is the most appreciative man a friend could have. He deserves a chance and he has earn the right to live the rest of his life in a happy, loving and pain free way without the extra burden of financial stress. I know he would do it for any of us in a minute.
With the money problems out of the way, he could concentrate on the task at hand. Get the best possible treatment and continue having the best attitude toward life. With your help, CANCER CAN BE BEATEN!
