I will be travelling to Ghana in December 2013 with a not-for-profit organisation named 3-foundations. Their mission is to bring about a positive change for people in the UK and developing countries.

I will be volunteering in a scientific research department of a local hospital. Issues that are currently addressed in the research facility are HIV/AIDs and tropical diseases such as malaria and river blindness.

In 2011, there were an estimated 230,000 people known to be living with HIV in Ghana.

Malaria is the primary cause of morbidity in Ghana. A National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) has been set up that aims to reduce malaria morbidity and mortality by 75% by the year 2015. I will work in partnership with the NMCP to educate about malaria prevention, as this is key in reducing mortality figures.

Educating the hospital and local community about signs, symptoms, prevention, and treatment of HIV/AIDs and tropical diseases will hopefully result in greater prevention measures, more frequent hospital admissions, and quicker treatment.

Your support is greatly appreciated and each donation will bring us closer to reaching our goal to see this project succeed and provide support for 3-foundations and Project Health. You can find out more about Project Health at www.3-foundations.org.uk

Thank you,

Laura
