Terrie Schemansky is a 51 year old women, who has two children and a new sevon month old grandchild. Terrie recieved a life changing sentence when she was diagnosed with MS. Terrie is a fighter, but at the same time needs all the prayers and donations she can get at this time.
Terrie started getting sick around 2005. We were unsure what the cause was since the symptoms started while she was on vacation. Terrie got deathy ill and was rushed back to michigan where she was hospitalized for over two weeks. At that time none of the doctors could find what was wrong. Terrie has been suffering since 2005 and after seeing several neurologist, going to U of M,seeing several physcians and being hospitalizatized on and off for several years until she was recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
Terrie started experiencing some unusual symptoms. She noticed her speech was beginning to slur and she was having a hard time doing normal daily activities, she was losing strength in her hands. She has also experienced some difficulties walking and has fallen multiple times.
As recently as May of this year she fell due to the disease where her leg was broken in six places. She now has a rod and five screws holding her leg together. She had to have multiple surgeries and has exhausted all of her medical benifits and financial resources.
When Terrie first started going to the Doctors they thought she was having mini-strokes, many test were ran and they ruled out the mini-strokes but did she lesions on her brain. Terrie was evaluated and has had pretty much every test ran that the medical providers can think of.
Multiple sclerosis (MS), also
known as disseminated
sclerosis or encephalomyelitis
disseminata, is an inflammatory disease
in which the insulating
covers of nerve
cells in the brain and spinal
cord are damaged. This damage disrupts the ability of parts of
the nervous system to communicate, resulting in a wide range of signs and symptoms, including
physical, mental,and
sometimes psychiatric problems.MS takes several forms, with new
symptoms either occurring in isolated attacks (relapsing forms) or
building up over time (progressive forms).Between attacks, symptoms
may go away completely; however, permanent neurological problems
often occur, especially as the disease advances.
While the cause is not clear, the underlying mechanism is thought to be either destruction by the immune system or failure of the myelin-producing cells.Proposed causes for this include genetics and environmental factors such as infections.MS is usually diagnosed based on the presenting signs and symptoms and the results of supporting medical tests.
There is no known cure for multiple sclerosis. Treatments attempt
to improve function after an attack and prevent new
attacks.Medications used to treat MS while modestly effective can
have adverse effects and be poorly tolerated. Many people pursue
alternative treatments, despite a lack of evidence. The long-term
outcome is difficult to predict/Life
expectancy is 5 to 10 years lower than that of an unaffected
population.
Terrie is one of the first people to help others when they need it, but one of the last to ask for it.Terrie was very active in her church, with her family and the community. Since her debilating desease she is unable to remain active. It has been very hard for her family to see her like this and through it all she still trys to have a smile on her face. This has really changed her life she had to completely handicap her house for her wheel chair, she has to have people help out with laundry and every day daily activites since she is unable to walk and even hold items. Only on her good days is she even able to hold her new grandson and that is only for a couple minutes.Terrie has alot of outstanding medical expenses and even with her insurance she still has large patient balance, she has to pay for someone to come in and help with every day daily activities including bathing and dr appointment since she can no longer drive. So let's all come together and offer our help now to Terrie and her family, with prayers and donations during this time. We will keep you informed on updates as we receive them. We thank you in advance for all the contributions and prayers.
