On October 5, 2013, 19-year-old Marine Lance Corporal Jeremiah M. Collins Jr. was killed while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province. The following day, October 6, Pfc. Cody J. Patterson, Sgt. Patrick C. Hawkins, 1st Lt. Jennifer M. Moreno and Special Agent Joseph M. Peters were killed in Afghanistan’s Zhari district from an improvised explosive device (IED).

As a result of the recent government shutdown, the families of these service members were initially denied the $100,000 in funds, known as the “death gratuity,” that are used to help cover all funeral and travel costs. Thankfully, the Fisher House has stepped up to the plate to cover these expenses in the meantime. However, generosity does not have to stop there.

Although no amount of money can truly fill the void of these brave service members, I am hoping the funds raised here will help lighten the burden these families are facing. All funds raised through this campaign will be sent directly to the family members of those lost.

If you have questions regarding this fundraiser, please do not hesitate to contact me at the email listed above.

**Fundraising efforts for Special Agent Peters are being accepted through a different official website. Information for donations will be available soon.
