On Friday July 26, 2013 a good Samaritan was driving to Saint Petersburg from northern Florida when she saw a young, severely malnourished, and injured puppy on the side of the road. The puppy would not have survived much longer if she had not been picked up that day.
Her gums were very pale due to her severe anemia which was likely caused by an infestation of an internal parasite(hookworms). Her whole body was covered in scabs and abrasions which we suspect she has as a result of being thrown from a car on the highway where she was found. Not only was she injured, she was so skinny; weighing only 12 pounds, where she should weigh 30 at 6 months of age. She was dehydrated and was infested with fleas and ticks, causing a skin infection and she had a large swelling on the right side of her face. The swelling is believed to have been caused either by being hit by a car or kicked in the face.

In order to stabilize the puppy she needed some intravenous and subcutaneous fluids in order to rehydrate her. She received an antibiotic injection, a dewormer, and some high calorie food. She was bathed and placed in a warming cage in hopes of raising her temperature. At the end of the day she was sound asleep, it was almost as if she had never slept in her life.

As the puppy began to slowly heal and become rehydrated the veterinarian revisited the swelling in her face. Upon oral examination they found that the puppy had a fracture in her lower jaw, requiring an appointment with our local veterinary dental specialist. The puppy had a full set of dental x-rays, which showed the fracture in her lower jaw and explained the swelling of her upper jaw. The veterinarian was able to realign and stabilize the fracture. He placed to wires to hold the jaw in place and used an acrylic splint to help stabilize.
Both veterinarians believe that this neglected puppy will make a full recovery with the necessary treatments, medications, and care.
Please help support her veterinary care so she can go to the loving forever family that she deserves. Any money given will go directly to support her care and recovery.
