I rescued Rocky in October of 2011 from a man selling him out of the back of his truck for $20. He was only 6 weeks old at the time and when I took him to the vet he had worms and had lost a lot of blood from his 3.5 lb body due to fleas. He has since turned into the best dog anyone could have ever asked for. He loves everyone he meets and everyone who meets him falls in love with him. He has the cutest floppy ears, the best personality, and is extremely smart. I noticed he had an ear infection a couple of weeks ago so I took him in and the vet noticed he had an abnormally slow heart rate (40 bpm). A normal heart rate for a dog his size is around 120 bpm. I had my first child a few days later and had to wait until this week to get his heart work up done. Turns out he has a complete (3rd degree) A/V block. At a little over a year and a half old the vet told me this is extremely rare in young dogs. In fact, it is so rare (and so sad) that my vet sent his EKG to a canine cardiologist and the cardiologist read it free of charge and provided her expert recommendation. If he does not get a pacemaker the prognosis is very grim and he will probably only live another 1-2 years max. The vet told me that ultimately heart failure will take his life. Any donations to help us get as close to our goal as possible would be greatly appreciated. Before having my first child 16 days ago my pets were my children. I always said that owning a pet is a choice and they depend upon their owners for the best possible care they can give them. This is the first time I have ever had to choose between my pet and money and it is the worst feeling ever. I have already spent over $400 in the past two weeks fixing his ear infection and getting the heart work up done to determine what was wrong. There is no way I could afford to pay $5000 for a pacemaker after just having a new baby. This makes me extremely upset and I feel like a horrible pet owner since I cannot afford to help him. Again, anything you can contribute will help tremendously!!
