On April 19, 2013, Alex suffered a stroke which has affected the language centre in his brain. According to his doctor's he has lost 15% of his brain function. While he is still able to understand what is said to him, he has a very difficult time articulating his thoughts. They make sense in his head but he can't get the words out. His doctors have recommended that he stay in hospital for at least a month to receive intensive daily therapy. It is possible that he will improve over the next six months. At this point he is obviously unable to work and as of yet the social worker's have not helped him to fill out paperwork for disability for medical EI or short-term disability benefits. Even after all the necessary paperwork has been submitted it can take a very long time for funds to be approved and received. (I am all too familiar with this!) After speaking with Alex and Jennifer yesterday I decided that it would be great if we as their friends and family could help support them financially. They are a family of five, and just because one is incapacitated does not mean that the bills stop coming and the kids no longer need to be fed. Let's show our love and support for Alex and his family in a real and practical way by donating what we can. Even if you can only donate $5, every little bit helps.
