What you do.
Penland Post Office Project was established by community members to preserve the building that the Penland Post Office operates out of and to restore the General Store side. The building was built in 1902 and is on the Historical Registry. The video above explains more. It was filmed back when Jean McLaughlin was the Executive Director of the Penland School of Crafts.
What you've done.
The Penland Post Office Project has made a lot of progress in the past decade and we are coming close to the end of our renovation project. The General Store side was in complete disrepair. We needed to restore this part of the structure to keep it from collapsing. Funds were raised to complete all necessary repairs. The North Wall was 24 inches lower than the middle of the room before. Now, it has a solid foundation (including under the Post Office), insulation in the walls, a totally new electrical system and lights (in the Post Office as well), new ceiling and a Museum Room area using the preserved Chestnut wood from the walls. We've had repairs done to the roof and chimney. The building has received new coats of paint, as well as many small details too numerous to list here. |  |
How funds will be used.
We will use the funds from this campaign to drill a well, install a septic system, public restroom and heating, which will enable us to bring the whole building into the current century!
 | So far, we have gotten the permits and easements for the well and septic. We've gotten engineering and architectural plans for the repairs and renovations to the Back Room where we will be installing the restroom as well as extra space that will be available for use by the PPOP and possibly the community. We intend to rent out the General Store space when the project is completed. |
