Jamie Ludovise hasn't added a story.
My name is Jamie Ludovise and I’m a staunch advocate for the homeless.
I became involved in early 2017; Orange County was clearing encampments from the bike trail along the Santa Ana Riverbed and had no viable alternative for the people whose camps were cleared. From that time on I’ve been actively involved in helping the homeless. I’m an illustrator and I wanted to make the public aware of the suffering that these people go through. So it came to me to begin a non-fiction graphic novel about the lives of homeless people in Orange County.
In my work with the homeless, I came upon The Riverbed Wash, a newsletter written for the people living there, by a man named Patrick Hogan. While continuing my advocacy, I eventually met Patrick. As we got to know each other, he told me many stories of those living on the streets.
Sometimes people are put into our lives at just the right moment we need them there. As I began to think of how I wanted to inform the public of the humanness of people who are homeless, I thought, here’s a writer who can do just that. I presented my idea to him. He agreed to work with me and so our collaboration began.
Homelessness knows no boundaries; it can affect anyone. The reasons for becoming homeless are endless. The important thing to know is that each individual has a story. Their stories should be heard.
To bring awareness to people that anyone can find themselves homeless, our duty will be to tell those stories. We will not sugarcoat it nor romanticize it. These are people’s lives.
But we need your help. We’ve got nothing to start with and we need some funds to make this project a success. In order to have a better chance of being published, we intend to document our project through a blog and short 1-2 minute videos. The more followers we have, the more likely it is that a publisher will take a chance on our book. When our novel gets published, we will donate 50% of all profits to the homeless.
So anything you donate to us will be used for the following:
- Inexpensive recording equipment for sound & video (~$300 or so)
- Food and other supplies for the homeless people we will be interviewing (I’ve spent $100+ on this in the past week alone and I struggle financially myself)
- Help with living expenses for both of us, since time is money and we want to dedicate as much time as possible to our book
If you can afford to donate anything, we would greatly appreciate it. If you can’t, please share our fundraiser and help get the word out. You can follow our progress on our Facebook page @sleepingroughbook.
Thank you,
Jamie
