Please help my fellow classmates and I fund our service trip to Mexico! We'll be working with a local school for underprivileged families, helping it with renovations, visiting its poorer families, donating clothes and food, and possibly teaching English.

Sometimes we are tempted to be that kind of Christian who keeps the Lord’s wounds at arm’s length. Yet Jesus wants us to touch human misery, to touch the suffering flesh of others. Whenever we do so, our lives become wonderfully complicated and we experience intensely what it is to be a people, to be part of a people.

—Pope Francis

For decades, Wingren Study Center, a center of Opus Dei, itself a part of the Catholic Church, has organized a college spring break service trip to Monterrey, Mexico. Its goal has been to live solidarity with the people of Monterrey. To do so this year we will be working with Ciudad de los Niños de Monterrey—“an educational and family center dedicated to families with limited resources and to the academic, technical, human, and spiritual formation of children, young people, and parents of the metropolitan area of Monterrey”[1]—helping with renovations at the school, visiting some of its poorer families in the slums, donating clothes and food, and possibly teaching English to its students. The trip will run March 11–18.

I (Michael Simmons) went on the trip last year with a dozen other UD students and found it to be a genuine help to those we served as well as a formative experience for us participants. I am returning this year along with a friend of mine Malcolm Kuemmerlein, and we’ve started this fundraising campaign to help pay for clothes and food to donate, supplies for the service project, and our own travel and lodging expenses.

Please keep the trip in your prayers and/or thoughts, and, if your prayers and/or thoughts so lead you, please donate.
