Jennie Petuch hasn't added a story.
I have loved dance and movement even before I started pre-ballet when I was 4. When I was at home, I enjoyed playing video games with my brothers which I found both relaxing and engaging. But don’t worry, my mother made sure we went outside to be in nature too! As an undergraduate student I discovered dance companies that were incorporating projections into their works, but not only simple projected videos, but ones that had interactive tracking effects. At that point I was totally blown away that two worlds that I love can come together to create cutting-edge work.
Fueled by this fascination with the beauty of movement and my love of video games, came my inspiration to combine the two, and in turn became my Master’s thesis project, which will be presented on March 24th and 25th 2017. With the growth of technology it has become popular for choreographers to produce projection-enhanced works. This lead me to my thesis research of striving to create a perfect symbiotic relationship between movement and projection on stage; where each influences the other and both hold equal importance to the overall live-production.
To achieve this, I approached the FSU Computer Science department and asked if they would be interested in creating computer software to help achieve this convincing illusion. Three students and two professors collaborated with me to create our original software, ViFlow, that has key components of infrared motion tracking capabilities, so the projections are being tracked in real-time to the bodies on stage. Check out the links of our progression of ViFlow: https://vimeo.com/171473023 and https://vimeo.com/161335620. My collaborative research team published and presented our findings at the International Computational Creativity Conference in June 2016 in Paris, France.
Art is a reflection of the times. My life-long mission as an artist is to create works relatable with dance and interactive technology, bridging a gap for multiple generations in the theater audience. I feel work like this could resonate with those viewing it and could even inspire future choreographers, students, and artists to explore this technology that could result in new movement invention and innovative works that stimulate and reach multigenerational audiences.
At a motion tracking conference that I attended this summer (2016), I learned from other artists the advantage of multiple projections and the endless creative possibilities. This only reconfirmed my determination to pursue this as my career.
As a student I am able to use the school’s technology equipment, however I need more than is sometimes available plus I want to own this equipment to continue in this career. Multimedia dance is my passion, my niche, and my planned career for my future, but I need your help to make this possible!
I've listed a few items below as a sampling of the kind of equipment I need. Please consider donating funds or equipment. Any little bit can help!
