Teacher training is currently, almost exclusively, non-existent in Tanzania, despite the fact it is commonplace for class sizes of up to 80. Imagine trying to teach a class of this size, having no training and only the same extremely limited education yourself; something evidently needs to be done.

This summer we are heading out to volunteer in Njombe in rural Tanzania as part of a group of 20 qualified teachers. Our goal is to deliver a teacher training course called the 'Limited Resources Teach Training' (LRTT) to over 150 local teachers which will have a direct impact on the education of over 15,000 children both in Primary and Secondary education in Tanzania. Hopefully the following puts this into context:

"£20 - the cost of workshops for one local teacher attending an LRTT course. With an average class of 65 students over ten years, that's just 2.5p per student for a better education and better life outcome."

We are absolutely thrilled to be part of such a worthwhile cause; the fact that we will be training local teachers, as opposed to children, will create the highest impact in the long term.

We hope that you can immediately share our excitement about the impact we are hoping to have in raising the standard of education in Africa (and show this by making a generous donation of course!), however we also feel it is extremely important to share with you the costs involved, so that you can be assured your donation is going where it matters the most.

The cost of the LRTT program to each 'fellow' (i.e. ourselves!) is £1250. A portion of this covers our basic cost of living (accommodation, food and transport) whilst in Tanzania. We have therefore reduced our target of fundraising by £500 so that donations made go solely toward the costs associated with delivering the course itself:

  •  transport for local teachers to and from the conferences
  • hire of the building for conferences
  • compensatory pay toward local teachers in lieu of their teaching wage during conference days (who otherwise would not be able to afford the loss of income by attending)
  • living expenses for local teachers whilst attending conference days
  • resources for conference days

All other expenses incurred to us (flights, vaccinations, "spending money", visas, insurance etc.) are not a part of our fundraising target and in the event that we do exceed our target (fingers crossed!) we will donate all excess funds to the LRTT charity directly.

If you have managed to read this far, we commend you! You've already committed this much of your valuable time, so don't delay- donate now! It goes without saying that any donation, great or small, is hugely appreciated and, as you can see by the statistic cited earlier, will really make a difference.

Thanking you all kindly in advance,

Kate and Alistair x
