JoAnn Sansevero-Palestrini hasn't added a story.
Hello, It’s that time of year again for me to reach out to all my friends and family for a very GOOD cause….it’s been approximately 20 months now since Kristi’s injury and I am more than proud of how far she has come on this journey. She has handled this devastating interruption that has affected her life in ways you can never even imagine. Instead of drowning herself in sorrow she has chosen to fight this challenge head on. Her positive attitude and courage has shown in her progress from day one. She has attended therapy sessions at Kessler for 16 months now, but at this point they have taken her just about as far as she can go.
She still needs therapy on a daily basis, and needs to go to a facility that features a more aggressive and different approach. We were advised by Kessler of an organization called “Push to Walk” which is located in Riverdale, NJ which is about an hour from our home. Their website is (http://www.pushtowalknj.org/). They are a non-profit organization that provides individualized workouts and resources to people with spinal cord injuries, paralysis, and other neurological conditions including, but not limited to Multiple Sclerosis, traumatic brain injuries, and stroke. Their approach is a cutting edge technique encompassing what the medical community terms Activity Based Training. Their focus is on helping clients maintain and improve their physical and mental health allowing them to regain their independence. Push to Walk is passionate about inspiring and motivating people with spinal cord injuries and other forms of paralysis to realize their individual potential.
It is a “one on one” form of therapy that is in tune to her needs. Many of you have seen her videos posted on Facebook from PTW and the different approach they use. Kristi was able to stand on solid ground and take her first assisted steps in 20 long months, something she hasn’t done at Kessler. They have her out of her wheelchair at every 90 minute session, and she utilizes 3-5 different machines and several different activities are done. Unlike Kessler where she is mainly going there to stretch her muscles and use an FES stimulated bike. Kessler is a great rehabilitation facility but she has outgrown her time there.
We were able to get an evaluation at PTW and scheduled sessions for 4 weeks using money we had left over from her Fund Raiser last year. PTW is not covered by insurance so we had to pay “out of pocket” for her to try it out and to see if it was something worth continuing. From day one we were very impressed and needless to say excited. Their approach is just what they say it is, and Kristi is getting so much more out of her therapy here.
April 30th will be her last session unless we can raise enough money for her to continue. Unfortunately insurance does not cover this facility. Every dollar donated will be one dollar closer to paying for these sessions. Your donations and prayers are greatly appreciated in her time of need no matter how big or small. She has shown me what it is to be truly courageous and brave throughout this whole surreal event in her life, and she is truly my Hero and always will be...she is a fighter and has one of the strongest wills I've ever seen in any human being, So please donate what you can....such a little thing like walking is taken for granted by us all….. Don't Stop Her Now! Thank you in advance. JoAnn...her Mom
