The Campaign: “Chicken for Olivia”

At $10 a chicken, How many chicken would you like to order to school Olivia and give her a chance for a bright future?

The Story:
Olivia Kipkorril Anindo is an 8-year-old girl that lives with her mum Helen and older sister Lucky, in Wangige just outside Nairobi.

When I first met Olivia she was one of many street children begging in my neighbourhood, Westlands. Soon I realised that I couldn’t help them all to a “sustainable level” and that in fact donations would only encourage mums to keep their children begging rather than schooled

So I started focusing in one girl, Olivia, and soon after, her whole family (as the only way to bring her back to school was to build rapport with her mum, a mother of 4 and monoparental family). It took me a great effort and time to get the trust from a mother that for years made a hard living begging with her kids, to take Olivia out of the streets.

First thing was to bring them out of the filthy and dangerous slums they lived in, the infamous Kibera, with over 1million souls living without water, sanitation, security, toilets or rubbish disposals. Second was to school both girls, which I did thanks to the generous contribution of my U.N ex-colleague Christina Power. Finally I tried to improve their diet and always kept an eye on them by regular visits and short journeys after school holidays.

The Issue:
Two days ago, when I asked Olivia what present she wanted for Christmas, she responded: “For my Christmas present I need chicken and call me now please"

Yes, that broke my heart...

It reminded me the crude reality some people live with... with $2 you can only eat flour, tea, beans and sukumawiki (hence Olivia's chicken cravings),

I got her some chicken and send some money but then I realised that "with a little help from my friends" we can support the mum start her own business and give her a real change to get out of poverty for good. (she wants to cultivate land and sell crops in the market).

We only fundraise a fraction, so we decided to put Olivia on boarding school, so at least she has a chance for a bright future.

I will use the FB page:

for communicating and updating news from the Kipkorril family

After this experiment, you now have an excuse to visit AFRICA!

Sweet thanks
