Dear Friends and Family of Andrew , Dawn & Bill Headington,

Andrew is going to Camp this year and the ARC has informed Dawn and Bill that Andrew will need a 1:1 aide to assist him every day while he is there. This is an additional expense that they did not expect.

I was recently talking with Dawn about the situation and asked her to jot down the specifics of what is going on. She shared that Andrew was diagnosed with autism at age two. He began pre-school with therapies during the school day at age three. There was some improvement verbally until the age of four. In the summer of 2008 when Andrew turned five he entered the INCLUSION CAMP PROGRAM at the JCC Camp by the Sea in Margate, NJ courtesy of the ARC of Atlantic County. For the first time they saw SIGNIFICANT changes in their son. He began PLAYING "WITH" other children. He said HI! to other campers, teachers and members of the public. He stopped screaming each night in the bath when it was time to wash his hair. He became skilled on the computer and learned to LOVE the beach and the ocean. Most of all he looked forward to something for the first time in his young life. Not that any parent wants anything to be "wrong" with their child but because of programs like Camp By the Sea (the only INCLUSION CAMP IN NEW JERSEY), we have become "grateful" for autism because our son is able to attend courtesy of the ARC of Atlantic County and funding from the New Jersey Department of Children and Families.
Since Andrew is turning 10 this year and becoming much more curious about the world The ARC is requiring him to have a one on one aid for the eight weeks of camp."

Dawn also shared that the cost of the camp 1:1 will be $2200 for his entire 8 week stay. As many of you know, Dawn lost her job in January and their medical benefit costs have been very high.

Lets all come together and be a blessing to Andrew, Dawn and Bill. It's times like this that we can all pull together and can really help another person through a difficult time.

Thank you for your help!
