My name is Olivia Byrd; I attended the School of Education, at Howard University. My major is Human Development Psychoeducational Studies. Unfortunately, I owe a balance of 10,000, until that balance is paid for, I will not be able to register, for spring semester. I am also unable to apply for many scholarships; because Howard will not release my transcripts, until I pay the balance. I have exhausted all of my options; and am at a road block. It is so important for me to finish my education! I just need support! So my dear Facebook family, and friends I am asking for a donation of $10. I know it is a hard time for everyone; if you are unable to donate $10 anything would help. I appreciate everyone taking the time to read this. To further know about my story, please continue to read.

Gandhi has once said “Be the change, you wish to see in the world.”
I have tried my best, to live up to the meaning of the quote. I have always had a passion for volunteering, and helping others in the world. Growing up, my parents divorced when I was younger. My mom had to take care of me, and my brothers, on her own; working constantly to do so. I did not have a positive female role model; that I could get advice from, or teach me how to be a young woman.
School was always my oasis from home, and my problems. So during my years of middle school and high school, I was heavily involved in many extracurricular activities. Unfortunately, I did not graduate from high school, due to not passing one of the High school exit exams. I was so devastated, that I was unable to graduate, and continue onto college. However, I did not let that keep me down for long.
With that experience, I vowed to help support, teach, and guide other young people; that are in need. I can’t see myself doing anything else. I have made a positive impact in my community, and even in another country. I was able to travel with a team of health professionals, concerned individuals, and the Lieutenant Governor of California John Garamendi. I helped Dr. Luther Castillo, a Garifuna doctor, and his team of Hondurans, and Cuban doctors to implement the first Garifuna Hospital in, Ciriboya Colon, Honduras. A life lesson, I learned from the Garifuna’s, is to take advantage of opportunities available. When you become successful, never forget who you are, or where you come from. Always return to your village; and pay it forward. I started to think about my own community and the difference, I can make in it. Since Honduras, I’ve carried the lessons and experiences, I learned and it has truly pushed me further; in my endeavors to make my own community a better place. So, I co created a youth program. The program is a Youth Leadership & Empowerment program, for young women. The W.I.S.E. Academy of Dreams is a series of different programs for young women, of different grades. One of the series is specifically for 7th and 8thgrade girls. Furthermore, I also helped to develop a Cultural Center for the program, and community. I facilitated in 7 local middle schools and 4 high schools. I managed a classroom size of around 10 to 20 girls; teaching staff 6 non-teaching staffs, and students of various ages, from 7th grade to 12th grade. I have helped the school administration, by creating a synergy, between regular day and after-school program, through academic curriculum, achievement, and leadership/character development. Above many topics, I always touched on the importance of education, and obtaining a degree. I began to realize, I needed to obtain that goal and experience, for myself. Getting accepted to Howard; is one of my biggest personal accomplishments. I am fighting to finally finish my college education; and do something in my family that no one else has accomplished. I appreciate you taking the time to read my personal statement. Please invest in me and my dreams.
Cordially,
Olivia Byrd
