My name is Amy Diane Coronado and I am a third grade teacher in Mesquite ISD. I am a wife and mother of two young children. I have been diagnosed with an artera schlera venous malformation on my right arm. The type of AVM I have is very rare. I was born with what was, at the time, considered to be a birthmark and never had any issues with it until after I had my second child. In the last seven years it has grown, pinching off nerves and causing quite a bit of pain. I have been to five specialists in the DFW area, but no one wanted to help me, they all wanted to amputate. I finally found a wonderful dermatologist name Dr Selkin in Plano that works with skin malformations, up to this point I had not been given a diagnosis. Dr. Selkin ordered scans and MRIs and worked diligently to find me a specialist that would be willing to treat and not amputate. He sent my case to UT Southwestern, MD Anderson, Mayo, and Cedars, but they all turned me away. Then miraculously he found Dr Yakes, an Interventional Radiologist/Vascular Radiologist who is not only willing to help me, but excited to do so. Every other Dr wanted to cut off my arm, but Dr Yakes wants to save it using new innovative methods that only he performs. His patients travel from all over the world to see him. The only problem is that he is in Denver, Colorado and I am in Mesquite, Texas. He and his staff helped me to get the insurance company to pay 80% of the treatment, but even with insurance covering 80% of the procedure, I'm looking at $5,000 for anesthesia/hospital stay, plus airfare for two another $1000 and hotel $300. This is just for one trip. I will find out after the first procedure how many more I will need when I go back to Denver 4-6 weeks post op and then he'll schedule the surgery to remove what is left of the tumor. Without treatment, the tumor will continue to grow and I will have to agree to the amputation at the elbow. If I wait and it grows passed my elbow, then I will have to lose my arm at the shoulder. So, my husband, my family and I are asking for your help to raise the funds necessary to get the treatments and heal my arm. With blind faith I scheduled the appointment and first embolizm for July 9 and 10. I have faith that with your help I can get the healthcare I need. If an excess of funds is raised, it will be donated to a charity that Dr Yakes recommends in hopes of helping someone else in my situation. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. God bless you, Amy Diane Coronado
