Homelessness Should Never Be the Better Option
Join Us in Doing Better, Today
Our Mission: Do Better League helps cultivate the conditions and communities needed to end homelessness, for good - trusting people to do the work, and systems to follow.
Problem: The Pinball Effect
Every day in Phoenix, people experiencing homelessness who just want a place to call home are routinely bounced between agencies: repeating paperwork, reliving trauma, hitting the same dead ends. Without an address. Without a phone. Without an ID. Without a safe place to keep their belongings.
We call this the Pinball Effect. And when the bouncing stops, people fall to the bottom. This isn’t a personal failure - it’s how pinball machines are supposed to work.
The flaw isn’t in the people. It’s in the design.
Solution: The DBL KNOT
Fixing the design flaws means the bouncing can stop. Recovery from homelessness can happen. Do Better League (DBL) is charting a path out of homelessness through a structured framework we call the KNOT: Knowledge, Network, Opportunity, and Transformation.
The current homelessness response system is reactive: it waits for people to hit bottom, no matter how many times they’ve been there before. DBL challenges these norms by cultivating the conditions needed for a real, lasting departure from homelessness.
Our KNOT framework offers a route grounded in foundational support and peer-led solutions:
- making sure vital information and documents are obtained and securely stored,
- connecting program participants to best-fit resources, and
- creating the space for people to connect, learn, heal, and grow.
DBL is founded, guided, and sustained through lived expertise. The people who walk others through the system’s roadblocks have navigated those same roads themselves. This first-person experience closes the gap between good intentions and real outcomes. DBL also partners with field professionals and experts in areas like mental health, veterans' services, aging, and medical needs to ensure every person we serve has access to the support they deserve.
Journey: How It Actually Works
People find DBL through street outreach workers, referrals from government agencies and local nonprofits, our presence at community events, and by seeking us out directly. However they arrive, we start from the same place: acknowledging that by the time someone finds us, the system meant to help them has already failed them. Many are at the end of their rope. Again.
Our approach is different. Instead of handing out phone numbers and referrals leading to red tape, we start with an assessment, together mapping each person’s route to a home. What’s missing from their toolkit? What direction can they trust? How can DBL serve them so this is the last time they experience homelessness?
Then we work through the DBL KNOT: 12 structured steps moving from immediate survival needs through building connection and stability, and ultimately into long-term community integration. Progress is documented and protected so it’s never lost, ensuring no one must start over when they walk through a new door.
Our Goal
The journey looks different for every person, but the destination is always the same — a stable, sustainable place in the community, supported by peer connection and the tools to stay there. Not a shelter bed. Not a wait-list. A real home, and real support to keep it.
Homelessness isn't a necessary social condition to be managed by those who have never lived inside of its chaos. Rather, it's an inevitable outcome of broken systems — and it can be mapped, navigated, and redesigned by the people who have already survived those systems.
How Your Gift Makes an Impact
The current response system spends enormous resources managing the homelessness cycles without resolution. Your gift to Do Better League does something different.
For approximately $375 per person, DBL provides ongoing, structured, peer-led guidance and mentoring designed to end someone's experience of homelessness — for good. Program participants will create something real, something that lasts, and when they reach the other side, they are invited to come back to help the next person do the same.
Your gift makes an impact! It covers direct participant support such as bus passes, ID vouchers, and document fees — the tools and systems that make the DBL KNOT real.
Together, We Can Do Better Today
Every dollar you contribute tells a person in Phoenix that someone who has never met them believes the system can be better — and is willing to do something about it. That belief is where everything else starts.
Your contribution is more than a tax-deductible donation. It's a step toward transformation.
Your one-time gift makes a real difference — and if you'd like to make it monthly, that option is available at checkout. Either way, please share this campaign with someone who believes what you believe. The more people who know, the faster we get there.
We're asking you to believe with us that homelessness is something our communities and systems can recover from.
Join Do Better League as we prove that homelessness never has to be anyone's best, or only, option.
