WOW! Thank you for the generous support in such a short amount
of time. We've met our goal for the replacing the garden beds.
Additional funds raised will go to the next phase: a new drip
irrigation system and a small greenhouse for the space so that
students in 6-9th grade Health classes can start seeds in early
spring when learning about nutrition.
Your support of the BASE community garden will give students an
abundance of opportunities to flourish and develop the three powerful
traits of our school mascot, the Phoenix – responsibility, persistence
and collaboration.
Our community garden is currently made up of 40 3’x6’ wooden raised beds that are in desperate need of repair. Boards are rotting and screws are coming loose, leading to unsafe conditions for our students. We are able to use one portion of the space to teach 50 AP Environmental Science students in grades 10-12 about agricultural practices each school year, and another portion is used by our neighbors in the Community Transition Program.
Our goal is to replace all of the existing wooden beds with long-lasting metal beds of the same size. This would allow us to safely re-open the garden to interested 6-12th grade crews and 6-9th grade Health classes, who will use the space to grow vegetables for our community and learn about the positive mental and physical health benefits of gardening.
Whether students are deciding what to grow, how to overwinter their bed to reduce weed growth or how to respond to unexpected weather and insect concerns, there are boundless opportunities to practice creative and collaborative problem solving while gardening. These experiences should be available to every student at BASE, and with your help they can be.
The community garden restoration will be a multi-year project. This year our goal is to restore the framework of the space: replace the beds, soil, and mulch for the pathways. The new metal raised beds are $74.99 per kit. We hope to purchase 33 bed kits with this grant. Our amazing PTO has offered to help us purchase soil for the new beds and mulch for the pathways, and we are working with local garden centers and community garden programs to secure plant donations.

Founded in 1988, the Beaverton Education Foundation raises money to provide hands-on innovative academic enrichment and advancement programs & projects that go beyond normal school funding at all Beaverton public schools and is a 501(c)(3) community-based nonprofit organization. BEF mobilizes community resources to fund innovative classroom projects, summer and after-school programs.
