BELIEVE IT OR NOT, BUT COLORADO IS ALMOST DEAD LAST WHEN IT COMES TO RECYCLING.
We are actually sending 14 billion pounds of trash to local landfills every year.
This is because there is simply no access to source-separated recycling in many communities, and many of us must use outdated single-stream programs, or simply throw our recyclables in the trash.
And what's worse, there is now an estimated 225 million pounds of glass still being thrown away into Colorado landfills every single year.
GLASS AND SINGLE-STREAM DO NOT MIX
FIRST, WHAT IS SINGLE-STREAM RECYCLING?
Single-stream is a recycling system which lets users put different kinds of recyclables like paper, plastic, aluminum, cardboard, and glass all together in one bin.
Once collected, these mixed materials are sent off to Material Recycling Facilities (or MRFs) where they are separated on a sorting line, and eventually shipped to manufacturers that turn them back into useable products.
SEEMS SIMPLE RIGHT?
SO WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?
When mixing glass with other recyclables it starts to break into smaller and smaller pieces, becoming nearly impossible for these recycling facilities to separate out from the other materials. These recyclables therefore become contaminated.
Recyclers in MRFs have no option but to send entire batches of these contaminated recyclables to local landfills. It is estimated that glass breakage yields 25% unusable materials on the sorting line.
1 FOR 3 ??
With a focus on the problem of glass in single-stream recycling, our "1 For 3" project is aimed at creating, expanding, and promoting glass-recycling opportunities for the State of Colorado.
For every pound of glass we recycle separately from single-stream, we are saving 3 pounds of other recyclables from being sent to the landfill
With the help from students and other volunteers, Colorado residents will be educated on the importance of glass recycling and encouraged to participate by utilizing glass-only recycling stations in their area. The objective of this project is to purchase, place, and service these stations throughout schools and communities, providing easy access for glass recycling, reducing landfill waste and helping to keep Colorado beautiful!
