Newport District Rink Commission hasn't added a story.
On April 1st, 2015, at the tail-end of the worst Winter in Nova
Scotia in 50 years, the Newport & District Arena completely
collapsed due to a buildup of ice and snow on the roof. For 42 years
this facility had served the local community and surrounding areas,
providing youth and adults alike with a gathering place supporting all
kinds of activities. As with many tragedies, it's the youth of our
community who will suffer the most. From the West Hants Minor Hockey
Association to the Riverview Figure-skating Club to the skating
activities provided for several local Elementary schools and the
neighboring West Hants Middle School, these children are all
immediately affected by the loss of the arena. As it did in 1972 when
the arena was first built, the community has rallied and pledged to
rebuild. While well insured, the insurance money will not cover all of
the replacement costs. This is where we are asking for your help.
Please consider making a donation and participate in raising the funds
we require to complete the rebuild of the arena. While any amount of
donation will be greatly appreciated, we ask that donation or not,
that you please share our campaign with your friends and followers on
Facebook, Twitter, etc. We are hoping that the power of social media
will allow us to reach beyond our small community to many more who
may emphathise with our cause.
