Over the next three months I will be training as a boxer in order to prepare for a three-round boxing match at the Aprons For Gloves charitable showcase on July 29th. In order to be allowed to fight, I have to raise at least $2,000 for Aprons For Gloves, a non-profit organization focused on providing community outreach through the sport of boxing. Based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the organization was developed by a small group of professionals and entrepreneurs who seized an opportunity to re-establish a historic boxing program for at-risk women and youth. The program offers free mentorship and training to individuals who may otherwise not have the resources or support to participate in such activities. You can learn more about who Aprons For Gloves helps here.
This cause means a lot to me because Aprons For Gloves bloomed out of an idea that was established by a good family friend, Judge George Angelomatis, and the gym he coached at, the Astoria Boxing Club. George became head coach of the Astoria Boxing Club in 1977 and eventually attained international coaching status. The Astoria gym was located in the basement of the downtown eastside Astoria Hotel, underneath the beer parlor. In the 1980s, Astoria became one of the premier boxing clubs in Canada. With his assistant coach, a probation officer, they recruited wayward and disadvantaged youths and attempted to channel their unbridled energy into a more positive direction in life. With their tough love approach, they transformed many by instilling in them discipline, self-respect, and confidence. George went on to achieve many milestones throughout his career as a boxing coach and provincial court judge. He sadly passed away in 2013. You can learn more about George here.
All of the money each Aprons For Gloves fighter raises will work to continue George's legacy. Although it may seem strange to some, boxing helps people develop self-confidence, respect, and discipline. George was a very important person to my family, especially to my brother. He was a constant presence in my brother's life, encouraging him, supporting him, and just spending time with him. It would mean the world to me if I could work to continue to support a cause that meant so much to George!
Any amount that you would be willing to donate would be much apprecaited!
