Ride To Give hasn't added a story.
In April of 2013, Jennifer and Ben Turner of Holts Summit, Missouri were happily expecting their third child. After a somewhat complicated pregnancy, Jennifer’s water broke prematurely and they welcomed Milleigh Blair Turner at 34 weeks gestation. Milleigh had to be intubated, but after only an hour, she pulled out her breathing tube on her own…she was feisty from the start! Milleigh only needed a nasal cannula for a few days and during her 13 day NICU stay, her main problems were feeding related. After being released, Milleigh was growing and thriving at home where she was doted on by her sister Mackayla and brother Gaege.
It was a magical time that sadly was not to last. Everything changed when Milleigh was 3 months and 1 week old.
On Saturday, August 10th, 2013, Milleigh’s father found her not breathing in her crib. Ben just happened to peek in on her while she was napping and noticed immediately that she didn't look normal. He picked her up and yelled for Jennifer who knew by the sound of his voice that something was very wrong. She grabbed Milleigh from him and told him to call 911. Jennifer laid Milleigh on the floor, took off her swaddle blanket and started CPR. Milleigh began gasping for air a minute into Jennifer doing CPR and doctors have told the Turner’s that Milleigh wouldn't be here today had Jennifer not started CPR when she did.
When they arrived at the local hospital, Milleigh was still breathing on her own but began having back to back seizures. She was intubated and transferred via life flight to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis, and then placed in a medically induced coma to give her little body a rest. After 8 days, once her seizures were controlled, she was taken for a brain MRI which showed Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy, which is significant global brain damage caused by the lack of oxygen. Doctors believe the seizures began due to that lack of oxygen but found nothing to indicate why she stopped breathing in her crib in the first place.
Milleigh was moved to the step down unit on the 9th day, where they spent another week working to get her eating orally before being moved to a pediatric rehab facility. The Turner’s learned to administer all of Milleigh’s medicines and continued working up to full oral feeds. After only a week, she was at full oral feeds and finally discharged. She came home on 7 different oral medications, all needing to be taken 2-3 times a day.
While in the rehab, Milleigh was given the formal diagnosis of Quad Cerebral Palsy caused by Interrupted/Near Miss SIDS. She also has global developmental delay, seizure disorder, and Cortical Vision Impairment. Milleigh has been seizure free since the initial event thanks to medication.
With the help of numerous therapies and hyperbaric oxygen treatment, Milleigh has continued to make very slow progress, but her parents and doctors are incredibly proud of her determination. Her receptive language is pretty spot on most of the time and she has a typical attitude of a nearly two year old. She enjoys watching her brother and sister play and she loves when they play with her. She loves to play with her toys on the floor, rolling side to side and reaching out for them.
Recently Milleigh started attempting steps in a special needs walker
called a gait trainer. The gait trainer is the perfect tool to allow
her to work on strength and mobility while practicing walking. This is
a life changing for Milleigh, however the Turners have carpet
throughout their home, so it's nearly impossible for Milleigh to gain
independence in her gait trainer. Jennifer and Ben would love nothing
more than to see their little girl walking freely around their home!
This is where Ride to Give steps in. We would like
to pay for the removal of about 700 square feet of carpet and have
laminate flooring installed. This will provide Milleigh the smooth
flat surface she needs to get move around the house. We can't wait to
see Milleigh getting the full effect of her new wheels, but we need
your help to make this a reality.
Please help Ride to Give provide this simple home makeover for this amazing miracle child.
