Bradley Micek hasn't added a story.
We started this fundraiser because our family (Brad, Shay, Andre, Remy, Izzy, and Roen) felt compelled to try to help our nephew Jake and his family with their medical and peripheral costs. Jake had 11 brain surgeries in a twelve month period and is currently in a chemotherapy regimen. The doctors are trying to shrink or stop of the growth of a tumor they could not completely remove. To date, the chemotherapy seems to be working. Jake has been incredible in his fight to get beyond these tumors.
Jake, along with his Parents Chris and Lauren, and older brother Zach have spent countless days at Children's Hospital. Chris and Lauren have exhausted their savings spending over $80,000 to cover the medical related costs despite having good health insurance. Chris works 6 and most often 7 days a week, setting tile to try to make ends meet. Their means, hearts, and bodies are being exhausted by this challenge. They have all been amazing, brave, strong, and resilient. We hope that this fundraiser can help to ease their financial stress and maybe they will be able to spend more quality time together or even go on a vacation.
TRULY, no donation is too small and Please share this story with anyone and everyone!!
Thank you for taking the time to read Jake's story. To hear more about it, this was written by his Mom, Lauren:
"On Tuesday, December 13, 2011, Jacob woke up with flu-like
symptoms. Later that afternoon, after conferring with his
pediatrician, we were referred to the local emergency room just a
few minutes from our home, to receive meds for dehydration and
nausea. After about an hour, it became apparent that something else
was happening with him and a CAT scan was ordered. Within the hour,
it was determined that he had a large mass on his brain and needed
to be transferred by ambulance to The Children's Hospital in Aurora,
CO.
The following day, a more extensive MRI was performed, and the
doctors discovered he had a large fluid filled cyst surrounding a
small tumor near the thalamus. The first procedure to drain the cyst
and biopsy the tumor was scheduled for, and performed the next day.
Unfortunately, the biopsy did not go as planned, so we had to wait
until the next procedure for the pathology to be determined. Once
the immediate nature of the cyst was gone, our doctor advised us to
go home and enjoy the Christmas holidays, with a return visit
scheduled for two days after Christmas. During the next surgery, the
doctors would attempt to remove the tumor."
Fortunately, the tumor was benign. Unfortunately, during 2012,
Jacob had 9 surgeries to remove the cysts, the tumor, and to repair
the incision site, for a grand total of 11 surgeries for this brave
little boy in a 12 month period.
The family received the news they had been praying for at a
follow up MRI in February 2013. He was clear for just over a year!
And then, in March 2014, the news wasn't what they were hoping for.
Jacob's MRI showed regrowth. :(
Following several meetings with top doctors at Children's
Hospital, Jacob had a picc line inserted and he is now receiving
weekly low dose chemotherapy for the next year."
To Date, The most recent MRI shows that the tumor has stopped growing and may even be Shrinking!!!
