I’m appealing for your help to support an International Student to finish his education and settle in Nova Scotia.

Let me tell you his story:

In the summer of 2011 Momodou Keita, a young man from The Gambia, in West Africa, came here seeking a university education. Pursuing a degree in IT and business at Saint Mary’s University, he got good marks and enjoyed his studies.

We first met Mo through his friendship with our son Alex, also a student at SMU. Living alone, far from home and family, we often invited Mo to join us for holidays and other events and he visited with us many times. We grew to know him and greatly respect his determination to make a life for himself here in Nova Scotia.

Mo’s living expenses and university fees were paid by his family in The Gambia, where his father worked at a UN laboratory. But, when the UN closed the lab in 2012, he found himself out of work and the family has struggled to support Mo financially.

Now Mo is receiving almost no funding from home. Mo’s education, living arrangements and even his ability to feed himself are in jeopardy as a result of his finances. He can’t afford to return to school this fall and so he may have to leave Canada.

In light of the Ivany Report, it’s clear that every single immigrant matters: as individuals and because they contribute to our sustainability as a province. We want to help this young man finish his education and begin a career in our province.

So I’m launching this appeal for financial donations in support of Mo’s education and continued presence in Nova Scotia.

Please play a part in helping Momodou to realize his dream by making a financial contribution. Your donation -- big or small – will make a difference!

Thank You.
