Because we live in Wisconsin, in order to both have full legal custody of our child, we have to go through the two parent adoption process. This means that Amber (my partner of 6 years) has to give up her rights as a biological parent, and then we both move to adopt our own child as two parents. It also means we have to go through a tedious process of a home study by an adoption agency - which includes full criminal background checks, medical exams, financial disclosure, home visits, disaster/fire safety plans, and more. All in all, we will have to pay nearly $7000 out of pocket in court and adoption fees to adopt a child that both of us were present at the conception, that Amber birthed, and that we would automatically have if we lived in nearby states that legalized same sex marriage. When/if we were able to be legally married, we would simply go sign a marriage license to receive the practical, financial, and legal benefits of the institution.

Instead of a honeymoon fund, we are asking our friends and family near and far to help us in any way they can to make our family legal. This will give us both legal standing for all of our future child's needs - medical, legal, educational, and emotional. Our future child is going to be well-loved and cared for - and we are looking forward to surrounding them with kindness, compassion, and strength from our family, friends, and loved ones.
