The short story:

The Bulgarian Forensics League will send its top Oratory and Duo winners from the April competition in Blagoevgrad, to the United States’ National Speech and Debate Association (formerly known as the National Forensic League) National Tournament from June 15-20, 2014.

We are so excited to have the opportunity to send three hard working and talented Bulgarian high school students to compete in this national competition in Kansas this June.

However, we urgently are seeking funds in order to send these students to the USA with plane tickets covered, accomodation and the ability to succeed at the competition.

By donating, you are sending the best that the Bulgarian speech community has to offer to compete with some of the most fierce competition they have experienced. They will gain valuable lessons in community, responsibility and be rewarded for their hard work and dedication over the past year of competition. This is an opportunity that these students might never have been given and we need your help for their dreams to be realized.

About the Bulgarian Forenisc League:

The Bulgarian Forensics League, was started by six Fulbright English Teachers in the winter of 2013. BFL was established to foster crucial skills in critical thinking, public speaking, research, and creativity in Bulgarian youth, so that they may become thoughtful leaders for their country in the future. BFL was created in order to give Bulgarian learners of English a chance to practice and perfect their English speaking skills through intelligent debate and interpretive performance competitions.  BFL hosted its first tournament in April 2013 at the American University in Blagoevgrad.  The fist annual BFL speech and debate tournament featured six schools and over one hundred participants.  In its first full academic year, BFL has served more than 15 high schools and 300 high school students in Bulgaria, and its numbers are quickly growing. How your money will be used

The approximate cost for each student, including round-trip airfare, registration fees, and accommodation, is $1800 USD. The average monthly salary in Bulgaria is $528, and bearing the full travel costs will be a hardship for student winners and their families. Because of this, BFL seeks your donations to support English education, speech and debate, and youth empowerment in Bulgaria.

To let you know how your donations are helping fund our trip, here is a breakdown of our costs for all three selected students:

  • Each round trip flight will cost $1300, for a total cost of $3900.

  • The hotel for the three students combined will cost $100 per night, for a total cost of $800.

  • Each student will receive a $20 food allowance per day for seven days, for a total cost of $420.

  • The registration fee is $20 per student, for a total cost of $60.

  • One of BFL’s American associates has generously offered to pick students up from the airport and drive them to the tournament site and arround town. The estimated gas cost is $100.

    The grand total is $5,280
