Hal Stedman hasn't added a story.
Jason Smiddy is a husband, father of three kids and mentor to many young kids! He has devoted his time coaching basketball and loves every minute of it. The kids bring him just as much joy and knowledge as he does them!
December 2011 Jason had to stop coaching and start a new battle! Jason was diagnosed with oral cancer. The cancer was in his tongue and also in one of his glands! He had 6 weeks of very aggressive treatment! Chemo, radiation and a drug to help save his glands. In this treatment the Smiddy family fell far behind on bills. Noah the oldest son, then 13 had stepped up to assume the "man of the house" role to help out. Jason's wife Jaime had to quit her part time job to take full care of Jason. The summer of 2012 they got a clear scan!! The cancer was GONE, but not for long! When he went back in for his 6 week scan they found that the cancer had moved to his lungs. Immediately the doctors and Jaime and Jason started their next plan of attack. Jason would undergo another round of aggressive treatment. He would first receive radiation and then get chemo. During the treatment Jason had a lot of pain in his hips. The doctors sent him for a bone scan which showed that one of his femurs had bone cancer. He received radiation for that and continued with the chemo for his lung cancer. After the second treatment he got horrible news! The cancer was not responding to treatment. Actually the cancer had grown and spread throughout his lungs. There was nothing left for his doctor to do, he had already received the 2 hardest chemo she had. The only option was to travel from Cincinnati to Chicago and hope that he can be placed in a study with a new experimental drug. Knowing that taking many trips to Chicago or having to stay there for a long time would be hard on their family and very expensive they made the very difficult decision to leave their home and move in with Jaime's mother Ellen. Ellen could help them with the kids and keep a roof over their heads without worry! Jason was accepted into the study and they travel to Chicago every other week for an overnight stay. After his first scan since beginning the study they received AMAZING news! The tumors were all responding to treatment and had shrank significantly!! The second scan still showed that the tumors were shrinking! This treatment is working and he will stay on it as long as it is. The medical treatment in Chicago is paid for since it is a study, but the Smiddy family also has almost $10,000 in current medical bills for local treatments.
Because of traveling to Chiocago every 2 weeks for treatment they have to be sure to have enough money for a hotel stay, gas and food. Jaime's mom has also fallen on hard times as her spousal support she used to pay for her house has stopped unexpectedly, Now the Smiddy's are back to paying all house bills AND trying to save to travel to Chicago!
