I am in the process of auditioning for a World Class Drum Corp. From modest beginnings more than three decades ago, Drum Corps International has developed into a powerful, nonprofit, global youth organization with far-reaching artistic, educational and organizational influence. A Drum Corp is like a professional marching band that competes nationally throughout the country during the summer. Ever heard of DCI? It used to be publicized on the ESPN channel years ago but sadly ended. That being said Drum Corp International is still a bounding competitive circuit that continues to teach young adults the responsibilities of living on your own while working for a common goal.
In order for me to participate I have to first audition for the Corp of my choice to earn a spot. As you may know I am a performer I literally live to perform. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that I would get a spot. I would be seeking to perform on the Corp’s color guard. I have marched with my High School’s Guard for one year upon during which I received The Best Showmanship award at the end of that season and currently I am marching with o3 Winter Guard which is a part of the “O Foundation of the Arts” which also oversees Onyx Winter Guard and O2 Winter Guard; which have both consistently made finals at Winter Guard International championships and received gold medals in their respective class level.
"The Cavaliers" is an all-male Drum Corp based in Rosemont Illinois. The sole mission of the Cavaliers is to provide the members with life changing experiences; both educationally and socially, which help each individual member gain real world life skills, musical training and performance experiences. Through the development of the character traits of dedication, discipline and teamwork, each member of this close knit, all-male fraternity learns what is required to be successful on and off the performance field. Participation in The Cavaliers instills confidence, quality of character and a strong work ethic that cannot be taught in any college or university and is desirable in the real-world workplace. Within the past ten years the Cavaliers have consistently placed within the top ten of the Drum Corp International World Finals, including two consecutive First Place top honors.
Let us discuss what this would entail all summer long. Although the official touring schedule hasn’t been approved and released yet, here are the general basics. Sometime in May I will move to a college or high school in Illinois, and we will stay there for about 3 weeks, learning and perfecting our show for the competition. From there, we will load the busses and start a 3 month tour across America, performing, competing, entertaining, and most importantly, PRACTICING in about 25 different states. We stop at many different schools around America to rest, eat, shower, and once again, practice. Drum Corp is a once in a lifetime opportunity as well as a life changing experience. Once you age past 22 you may no longer march for DCI. I am 20 years old now, I will be 21 this summer, and by next year I will be 22. I will only have 1 year.
With that said, this opportunity also comes with a great cost. I am responsible for membership dues of $2,500. These dues are put up for the costs of housing, meals, transportation, instruction, competition fees, rehearsal facilities, uniforms and equipment. I have been working tremendously hard to raise the money in order to participate, but already being very involved with my studies it is very hard to find timeto increase my work load. That’s where I need your help. I am seeking sponsors to help cover a part of my cost. I have been able to save some money by budgeting my money and working on not shopping so compulsively, which if you really knew me, that’s quite an accomplishment. I have been able to cover about one third of the cost. At this point any monetary amount will have a huge impact. I would be truly and eternally grateful for any support what so ever.
