Audry was diagnosed with cancer at 17 months old and we are currently in the middle of a 2 and a half year chemotherapy treatment regimen. Watching a child first hand struggle and battle with this disease has proven to be difficult beyond comprehension.
No child should have to fight so hard just to stay alive. The medication to kill the cancer causes headaches, pain and fatigue. It causes nausea, vomiting, mouth sores, and a number of GI problems. Many children need feeding tubes placed to keep from starving to death. It causes peripheral nerve damage and bleeding problems. It causes liver, kidney, and heart damage later on in life. It causes weak bones which cause fractures and dental cavities. The cranial radiation and spinal tap chemotherapy cause brain damage and cognitive delays. A mere cold can send them to the ICU with a death sentence.
Loosing their hair is the least of their worries.

This so called "rare" disease for children is more common than we realize.
-Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease for children under 15.
-The causes of most childhood cancers are unknown, and it cannot be prevented.
-It occurs randomly, sparing no ethnic group, socioeconomic class, or geographic region.
-Over 13,000 new cases of pediatric cancer are diagnosed each year.
- The incidence of cancer in children and young adults is growing at a greater rate than any other age group.
-The majority of treatments last 2.5 to 3.5 years, and today there are over 35,000 children currently in treatment.
-Today, up to 75% of children with cancer can be cured, yet some forms are resistant to treatment and the cure remains elusive.
-Despite these facts, childhood cancer is vastly and consistently underfunded.

Today 36 children will be diagnosed with cancer. Today 36 families will have their lives turned upside down, some losing jobs to care for their child, some relocating to a new city or state to have access to medical care, some will file bankruptcy due to the financial strain, and some parents will divorce as a result of the added emotional strain. Today 36 children will be placed on death row and have to fight to stay alive. 7 of them will not win the fight and will die. This day will continue to repeat everyday until there is a cure.
By the end of this year, cancer will claim the lives of over 1000 children. 1000 fathers and mothers will loose thier child. 1000 children will loose their brother or sister.
Ignoring these facts because they are sad and make you cry will not make it any less real!
I will not stop advocating until the number of children with cancer is 0.
