I wanted to take the time to write you to talk to you about the student organization that I am involved in. The organization is called Alternative Breaks@UCSD, or AB@UCSD. This organization sends a group of 12 volunteers, made of 10 students, 1 alumni advisor, and 1 community advisor, all around the United States and the world. What makes us different from any other program on campus is that we send volunteers during spring break who are educated on specific social justice issues that range from education, social and economic development, to environmental issues. We conduct intensive training on 8 quality components of Alternative Breaks, and focus much on education, direct service, and reflection. Specifically this year, I will be traveling to a site where cultural divide has been an issue of contention with a volunteer organization called Once Upon A Time (sorry it’s not the Tv show). We will be going Maryville, Tennessee to better understand the social justice issue involving indigenous populations and local ecology of the Native American community called Snowbird as well as work on conservation efforts to better preserve the Appalachian Mountains.
I am writing you now because with all in-country and international volunteer trips, there is a price tag attached to the trip. This includes airfare and programs fees (which are used directly on the program and service work.) My total remaining trip fee is about $500, which is a large sum for most college students. I currently work as an intern in student affairs to help myself pay the fees, but I also have other expenses outside the organization that require me to use my own money. I am not asking for a large donation, but anything helps and adds up. I hope that you can help me out financially to off-set these costs for such a good cause. My goals is to fundraise $250. You are not just giving me money towards an experience that I will never forget, as well as helping me help others in Tennessee.
