Our dear friend Ellie Phipps Oliver was hit by a drunk driver resulting in serious spinal injury and a dislocated right hip. She underwent a very rare and invasive surgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Az 16 weeks ago. The surgery included a heart surgeon opening her up from the front, removing two entire ribs, detaching her diaphragm, deflating and detaching one lung and moving her heart and aorta to expose the thoracic region of her spine for the neurosurgeon. He then removed 2 1/2" of bone from 6 different vertebrae and 5 herniated discs to relieve the pressure on her spinal cord. Her spine was then fused and braced with special rods and hardware. Without this surgery, paralysis was eminent. Ellie spent over a month in ICU in Phoenix and the recovery time is estimated to be in excess of a year. Ellie is also a bi-lateral breast cancer survivor. During the MRI's, after the accident, the doctors inadvertently found a large tumor on her thyroid, which must be removed as soon as she is healed from the surgery, as it is thought to be cancerous. Ellies 18 year old daughter was diagnosed with systemic lupus and is undergoing chemotherapy. Please help Ellie and her family during this difficult time. The road to recovery is long and the bills are quickly adding up! You can find more information and follow up posts on her recovery on Facebook at www.facebook.com/EveryoneForEllie. Thank you!!
