“Guys Making Pies” is a group of 5th grade students who got together and decided they were going to make a difference in other children’s lives this year at Christmastime. After some discussion the boys decided that the boys would sell, make and deliver pies for Thanksgiving. The boys had a goal of selling 5 pies each and if they could do ten that was amazing! The boys asked neighbors friends and family to support their cause. The boys ended up selling over 225 pies in about 48 hours! Luckily one of the boy’s (Dylan Melanson) grandparents own Bare Cove Cafe & Catering and they were able to use a commercial kitchen to fulfill the orders! They boys picked the charities they wanted to support and decided smaller, less known places should benefit from their work because there are many national charities that get tons of donations. They decided on The Family Life Center in Brockton which is a shelter that houses 13 families and around 40 children. They are hoping to provide toys for as many kids as they can as well as donate some playground equipment. Topping the Christmas lists from the shelter are new sheets for their beds. The children love bikes and there are only a few. They are also sponsoring families through the Department of Children and Families (formerly DSS) and through DCF’s Dahlia Scholarship which is a new scholarship that will grant “wishes” for children to partake in self esteem building activities such as swimming or dance lessons for a 4 year old girl and a gym membership for a teenage girl. These boys all play a variety of sports including Hockey, Basketball, Football, Soccer, baseball and Lacrosse all which are very expensive and some kids take for granted the fact they are fortunate to be able to participate! We have had generous donations from local businesses including Bare Cove Cafe & Catering, Lobster Express, Reilly Renovators, Wannop & Associates LLC, Larsen Mortgage & The Hingham Fire Fighters Association and want to thank them for their help! . Donations are still being accepted online. New unwrapped toys can be donated at Bare Cove Cafe & Catering or you can donate online! We are working on supporting as many families as we can and trying to provide Christmas Trees to all the families in the shelter! ALL of the money raised is going to the charities! They are also hoping to sponser other children to play a sport or get sporting equipment they otherwise cant afford now and after Christmas as well!
