POSITIVE BEHAVIOR BUILDS CHARACTER!
Our goal is to create a student store that runs on a currency of earned tokens to purchase goods. Throughout the day staff can give out tokens to reinforce positive behaviors. This will help students understand the correlation that their positive behavior impacts not just themselves but everyone around them. Tokens will be given to students who display positive character traits such as kindness towards peers, appropriate classroom and hallway behavior, arriving to class on time, respect, responsibility, and safety. Students who work the Husky Hut include our AVID students, students from our Leadership class, students in special education, as well as students learning English as a second (or third) language. This will build connections, empathy and understanding of students throughout our school community. When we look at our School Improvement Plan, we have a goal of creating a safe and inclusive learning environment. This project will give us a vehicle to have students develop mentoring skills as well as empathy all while the entire student population is working towards earning positive reinforcement tokens to purchase Husky Hut goods.
This proposal will help foster connection and community for our multilingual, multicultural and neurodiverse students. Regardless of their current abilities in conversational or academic English, students will be able to participate with peers in this aspect of our school community. They will be able to earn tokens and/or High Fives through school performance and interact with their peers as they go to see the latest merchandise. Our neurodivergent students will also benefit from concrete feedback regarding their behavior, as well as opportunities to interact with peers while working at the store or interacting with peers while choosing items to "buy." It will also help foster connection and community throughout our building and create a sense of community as everyone works toward earning these tokens. This will result in students perceiving our building as a safe environment, which is part of our School Improvement Plan. The Husky Hut will run like a student store, but the only currency accepted will be the tokens earned from staff when they spot positive behavior. The store will not only provide incentives for positive behavior and leadership opportunities for all students, it will also contribute to a culture of pride in our school.
