Home and Away Art Exhibit and Sale hasn't added a story.
Home and Away Art Exhibit and Sale
"Home and Away" began as a personal quest by London artist Diane McClure to honour the memory of her late parents in a meaningful way. The child of post-WWII European emigrants, she was struck by artist Rosemary Sloot's "Immigrant" exhibit (2012) which explored her mother's late-life confession that she always regretted leaving the Netherlands for Canada after WWII. That sentiment was quite different from that of Diane's parents', and it inspired in her the idea to explore the topic of the immigrant experience. She devised the concept of an art show entitled "Home and Away" that would invite artists with a connection to an immigration story to use art to compare life in the country of origin and life in Canada with a view to determine which is "home", which is away".
With the conviction that the scope of this unique event could be extensive, Diane sought the help of London artist, art teacher, and mentor Franca Smith, also a child of post-war immigrants, to collaborate on the project. A London Arts Council CAIP 2 grant was awarded in support of the show, and it has generated a great deal of excitement among the artists of Lambeth Art Association and the Brush and Palette Club, two of London's art clubs, and for many other artists working in London and beyond. It is clear that immigration is a topic that is close to the hearts of Canadians.
One notable feature of "Home and Away" will be the requirement for each work of art to be accompanied by a short written piece describing the immigration experience depicted in the art. These stories and the images of the art will be compiled in a book that will be for sale at the show.
Home and Away Art Exhibit and Sale will be held March 1-31, 2016 at Fringe Custom Framing and Gallery, 1742 Hyde Park Rd., London, Ontario, with an Opening Night Reception March 5, 2016 from 6-9 p.m. All are welcome.
The intent behind the exhibit is three-fold:
1. To better understand the immigrant experience.
Immigration has always been, and continues to be, Canada's story. Whether the stories that unfold in this exhibit are from days gone by or as current as today, there is benefit in providing a forum for the public to understand and reflect upon the enormity of the decision to leave one's homeland behind for an unknown future in a foreign land, and the reasons for doing so. In a world where different cultures sometimes collide in horrific ways, understanding another person's point of view could be an antidote for some of our society's ills.
2. To support regional artists.
From the outset, a goal for this show was to support local artists, amateur or professional, by providing them with an opportunity to exhibit their work to a broad audience and to compete for one of three monetary prizes. Artists will set their own price for their work, and all proceeds will go directly to the artist. "Home and Away" will accept artwork from any artist who would like to share an immigration story and will promote the show through many different channels including advertising to the public through social media and storefront posters, and directing notices to the art and humanities departments of the local secondary schools, Fanshawe College, and Western University.
3. To inspire.
Visual art is a powerful tool for illuminating a theme, and the breadth of the stories that "Home and Away" will explore has the potential to spark many new works of art, prose, poetry, dance. The exhibit will run for a month, giving the public an opportunity to return to it again and again, and the book will be available for those who wish to have a permanent record of the artwork and stories from which to study the topic.
Diane and Franca are seeking your help. They are gratified by the support of the London Arts Council for its generous grant, but to make this art exhibit everything it should be, more money is needed. We are seeking your input to reach our goal of $3000. The money will be used in three ways that align with the intent of "Home and Away":
1. To foster an understanding of the immigration experience, the show must bring in viewers, so money is needed to print promotional materials such as posters and postcards. We also need to raise funds to rent the gallery for the month, and to make opening night special with live music and ethnic foods.
2. To attract and support local artists, we are seeking money to provide generous monetary prizes for works awarded first, second, and third prize as judged by the adjudicator.
3. To inspire future works of art the book that will be offered for sale is an essential part of this exhibit. It is meant to be affordable to get it into as many hands as possible. Money raised will be used toward subsidizing the cost of the book.
We are asking for your help in two ways:
1. Your donation. Any amount you can afford will help produce this unique and noteworthy event.
2. Your support. Please pass the details of this campaign and Home and Away Art Exhibit and Sale to your friends, family, and colleagues. The more people who hear about this show, the bigger and better it will be!
