The worlds sinking shame, The failure to save migrants and refugees at sea.
The Story
Thousands of people fleeing conflict, persecution and violence are trying to reach safety in Europe. Others are escaping poverty. Many travel by sea. Despite the risks of the journey across the Mediterranean – which claimed 3,500 lives in 2014 - and despite bad weather conditions, the first three and half months of 2015 saw record numbers of refugees and migrants attempting to cross into Europe by sea, with over 21,000 arriving in Italy.
Italy’s decision, in agreement with the European Union, to end the Italian Navy’s humanitarian search and rescue operation Mare Nostrum at the end of 2014, after it had saved tens of thousands of people at sea, has not had the deterrent effect some European governments had hoped for. The decision to end the Italian Navy’s humanitarian operation, Mare Nostrum, at the end of 2014, has contributed to a dramatic increase in migrant and refugee deaths at sea. If figures from the latest incidents are confirmed, as many as 1,700 people will have perished this year, 100 times more than in the same period in 2014.
On 18 April 2015 estimates suggest that more than 800 migrants and refugees drowned during an attempted rescue by a merchant ship. Their boat capsized as those on board surged to one side, according to the coast guard. "They threw a rope ladder...Many tried to get on it and the boat capsized …I fell into the water…Immirdan, a Syrian woman died with her one-year old son.”
Europe’s negligence in failing to save thousands of migrants and refugees who run into peril in the Mediterranean has been akin to firefighters refusing to save people jumping from a towering inferno. Governments’ responsibility must clearly be not only to put out the fire but to catch those who have stepped off the ledge. John Dalhuisen, Amnesty International’s Director for Europe and Central Asia
Lampedusa is the largest island of the Italian Pelagie Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. The overcrowding is so now bad on Lampedusa (an island off the coast of south Italy) that supplies of clothing, food and water for new arrivals has run out. The latest migrants to arrive were sleeping in the open air around the buildings, and still wearing clothes soaked with sea water from their voyage. Among the emergencies to solve, there is the meal one: “The association which manages the reception can provide a maximum of 4,500 meals per day, while we need at least 6,000 and the Protezione Civile does not organize a meal service because it would cost too much, as they said”. Finally, according to Caritas data, the migrants who arrive in Lampedusa are generally in good health, but: “If the situation does not change, the risk of health complications is very high. Among the emergencies, we have to solve also the shower one: there are only about 20 showers for 4,000 people”.
In the next months careful estimates expect up to 30.000 new migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea. At the current level of deaths this would mean a minimum of 5 children (not counting adults) drowning a day.

Feb. 6, 2014: At least 15 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa die while swimming from Moroccan coast as they try to reach Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Police fire rubber bullets at the swimmers to force them back to Morocco.
Sept. 10, 2014: Some 500 Syrians, Palestinians, Egyptians and Sudanese drown after their boat is rammed by another boat of human traffickers off Malta.
Sept. 14, 2014: Libyan navy reports 26 rescued from a boat carrying 250 migrants off Libyan coast. About 200 missing and presumed dead.
Feb. 8-9, 2015: At least 29 die and 300 people reported missing after four boats become waterlogged in the frigid sea after leaving Libya.
April 12, 2015: Nine confirmed dead after boat capsizes off Libya. Some of the 144 survivors tell aid workers that about 400 aboard drowned.
On 8 February 2015 following a distress call, Italian coast guards braved high seas and freezing temperatures to rescue 105 people from an overcrowded dinghy. Their boat was part of a group of four that had set off from Libya the day before and got into trouble. A total of more than 330 refugees and migrants died on that day. Apart from two commercial vessels in the area, only the Italian coast guard was available to provide assistance. But facilities on the two uncovered patrol boats were insufficient to provide warmth and shelter to the rescued and 29 of them died of hypothermia on board. Salvatore Caputo, a nurse on board one of the coast guard vessels, said: “To keep them warm we made them rotate inside the cabin, but it was all very difficult…I felt so enraged: saving them and then seeing them die like that.”
Your contribution will help achieve a solution and stop what many call a genocide!
What we need:
Stage 1
Give immediate local relief. Purchase food, clothing, basic dedication mattresses, blankets, buckets, waste bins, hygiene kits, gas stoves, kitchen sets and solar-powered lanterns assistive and mobility equipment. Help the rescue boots with additional facilities to keep the saved migrants alive (thermo blankets).
Stage 2
Extend living quarters (Tents, Toilette cabins Showers) in Lampedusa and other areas to help provide correct shelter, water resources sanitary etc.
Stage 3
Create an awareness program in the home countries of the migrants to warn them what expects them if they try to migrate (working together with local volunteers and creating flyer, radio and newspaper ads). Create a local awareness and warning from the human scum, the traffickers!
Stage 4
Create with local art students a documentary called When the Ocean took my heart to create a global awareness about the migrant issues. Are we not all migrants in one way or the other? Stage 5 Provide legal assistance to prevent those that have arrived in the EU from being extradited back to nothing. And to assist those that may stay, in establishing a very basic base to start a new life. Assist in finding housing, work and local bureaucratical steps.
Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little." - Edmund Burke
About us:
We are a group of families living in Southern Europe and were simply devastated by the cruelty against our brothers and sisters in need. As I was once also a victim of Human Right issues I truly understand what it means to be left at the mercy of bureaucracy. As a US citizen and father of 2 I have teamed up with many volunteers including two wonderful locals from South Portugal, Isabel Henriques (Professor for Languages) and JoaoTeixeira (Professor of Psychology) both from the renowned Portuguese school: Escola Secundaria De Sao Lourenco. Together we created Iura Humana a free group dedicated to assisting those poor souls that are oppressed by others.

We stand with our word in true faith that every cent donated will go without deductions to those in need. All doners wil receive weekly project and spending report via email.
We carry all so called extra costs such as transport of goods etc on our own utilizing our small but efficient network of local volunteers. Help us save these lost humans that are in so dire need of a helping hand. Bless you. Mark and the team of Iura Humana
