When my cousin Amelia invited us over, I was surprised. We were not that close with Amelia. Not even when my aunt Mary Ann was alive, oh no. She was superior to each one of us, always acted like a stuck up grown up, even when we were little. I loved her mother, my aunt Mary Ann, my mother's older sister and best friend. She was the most loving woman ever, apart from my own mother of course, and I just could not see how Amelia could not take after her. Must have been her father, I would think, but we never got to see much of uncle George. He always had to work late and when we did see him, he would be too concerned with something else to spend time with the kids.
I especially loved the way my aunt cooked. She made the best pies of the family. Of the world, if you ask me. Whenever we were invited over I would stop eating the night before, so I would be hungry and eat as much as I could over there. Later on, I found out that it was probably not the best strategy, but oh well. I was too hungry for her food to have logic to think.
I guess spending time with her must have changed Amelia. She was actually kind of warm towards me and my husband. When we went over, I saw some other distant cousins and relatives as well. Ones I hadn't seen since my mother's funeral, perhaps. Obviously, she was taking over after her mother. Both out mother's, she had stepped up as the responsible one for our generation. That made me see her in a whole new light. I took a hard long look at her. She looked the same, except softer. She had a few strands of grey hair on her head, but nothing major had changed.
Then I saw the food she had prepared - it looked amazing! The whole table looked absolutely breathtaking. Our parents cooked a mean dinner, but were not interested in the looks. But these... there were no words. I had heard she had been to law school and I assumed she was working as a lawyer, I had no idea how on earth she could have cooked this magnificent feast while working full time. Could she have taken the day off to cook for her cousins? No, I didn't think she could care so much, but then again, leave it to her to create a thing out of nothing at all.
I couldn't help but ask her, of course. Had her mother, my aunt taught her her secret recipes? Did she know how to make those pies? "Of course not," she shrugged off. "I hired one of the top catering companies in Manchester - they work absolute wonders." And there it was. The secret, and the real Amelia. It was nice of her to try, though. And now I know I can create a feast like that too! With using this source, of course! To connect with Check It Out.
